Hakka Boa

I’m part Hakka, so Hakka food has always been associated with comfort food for me. It’s the food my grandmother used to cook when I was a kid, and good Hakka food always reminds me of home. My colleague Yik Mun said she knew a good place for Hakka food in USJ since we happened to be in the area for a meeting, we decided to pay Hakka Boa a visit. It had good reviews and ratings online so I was excited for some good Chinese food!

Hakka Boa is located right outside Main Place Mall

We got there right after lunch hour but it was still pretty busy

We looked through the menu and although everything looked really good, we did not want to overdo it as we were told the portions were pretty copious. We settled on a Minced Pork Bean Curd (RM 16), Salted Egg Chicken (RM 20) and Steamed Pork with Dong Choi (RM 20). We hesitated on whether to go for the salted fish option or dong choi for the steamed pork, but we finally agreed on dong choi.

I absolutely love tofu and I must have it if I’m having Chinese food. You can hardly ever go wrong with tofu so it’s always a pretty safe option, but the one at Hakka Boa was particularly good. It was eggy, soft and the minced pork gravy was well flavoured. I could have eaten this all by myself. The Salted Egg Chicken was also really good. It was well fried and the crust was deliciously crunchy and rich with the taste of salted egg. I couldn’t stop eating this either!

The steamed pork at Hakka Boa was also very good. The sauce was tasty with just the right amount of saltiness. I enjoyed the fragrant smell of onion and sesame oil in the seasoning. I also liked that the ginger was not too overpowering which is sometimes the case with this dish.

The three dishes that we ordered that day. I wish we had had space for more, but the portions were pretty large for just the two of us.

Our lunch bill at Hakka Boa came up to RM 68.25

We paid RM 68.25 for our 3 dishes, 2 portions of rice and 2 glasses of iced Chinese tea. I really enjoyed the food at Hakka Boa and felt the price was reasonable given the portion sizes. While USJ is not exactly a stone’s throw away from home, I will keep the place in mind when I’m craving the flavour and comfort of home cooked food.
